About the Story
Medieval histories and romances depict King Arthur as a legendary British leader who defended Britain against Saxon invaders in the late 5th and early 6th centuries. Even though King Arthur is considered one of the most iconic figures in Western folklore, most modern historians consider him a purely mythical hero or a composite of several real-life leaders. In Arthurian legends, King Arthur proved his right to rule by pulling the sword, Excalibur, from a stone and anvil. In medieval literature, the Holy Grail is most commonly referred to as a holy chalice. However, the earliest known version of the Holy Grail was described in a poem by Chrétien de Troyes, Perceval, the Story of the Grail (circa 1190) as a gold serving vessel set with jewels.
