Romeo Loves Juliet
About the Story
Romeo and Juliet was popular during Shakespeare’s lifetime (1564-1616) and has become one of Shakepeare’s most frequently performed plays and one of his most famous. It is not known exactly when Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet, but scholars believe the play was probably written sometime between 1591 and 1595 and was first published in 1597. Since its publication, Romeo and Juliet has been adapted many times for the stage as well as for film and opera. The most famous musical adaptation is West Side Story, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. West Side Story debuted on Broadway in 1957 and was made into a film in 1961.
